Cox's Bazar has come back to life again as a large number of holidaymakers have flocked to the beach city during the ongoing peak tourism season.
Tourists, however, have been seen flouting Covid rules in Cox's Bazar at a time when Bangladesh is seeing a surge in cases amid the threat posed by Omicron variant of coronavirus.
This correspondent has recently come across scores of tourists clicking selfies and taking group pictures on the longest sea beach of the world without caring Covid guidelines like wearing face masks, hygiene and social distancing rules.
Ashikur Rahman, a tourist from Dhaka, said, "Due to the recent surge of Covid-19 cases, the country may go into spells of lockdowns again. This is why I have decided to visit Cox's Bazar before movement restrictions reappear."
Mohiuddin, a tourist who came to the beach forgetting his mask, said, "I'm here to enjoy fresh air. Who wears a mask on holidays?"
Meanwhile, the administration seems to be busy alerting the tourists about the transmission of Omicron variant. Only a few pay heed to it.
An awareness campaign is being carried out by the tourist police on the beach. However, they can do little but keep an eye on the situation.
Lifeguard Jonaid Hossain said, "After a dull period, a large number of tourists have already arrived in Cox's Bazar. Everyone is having a good time here. "But, they are reluctant in maintaining health protocols against coronavirus," he added.
Cox's Bazar Bachao Andolan President Ayashur Rahman said, "Tourists visiting Cox's Bazar are our honoured guests. We each ensure maximum service to our guests from our respective position. If they come to Cox's Bazar and get services, we'll feel happy."
Cox's Bazar usually sees a surge of tourists on the eve of New Year every year but this year only a handful tourists visited the much-sought-after tourist destination possibly because of two recent incidents of rape and skyrocketing food prices.
Cox's Bazar Tourist Police Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed said, "Security has been ensured everywhere in the city. Police are also working in plain clothes."
"Action is being taken if any complaint is received. Cox's Bazar beach as well as other tourist destinations in the district are now crowded with tourists. So, additional police have been deployed there along with extra surveillance," he added.
District Civil Surgeon Dr Mahbubur Rahman said, "The number of positive cases is increasing again. Yet, most people are reluctant to follow health and hygiene protocols."
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Mamunur Rashid said, "Cox's Bazar has seen a huge influx of tourists this season. The administration has been fulfilling its responsibility for the safety of tourists with utmost sincerity. However, coronavirus cases are on the rise again. The decision of banning tourists will be taken if we are instructed."
