Top court upholds order to pay road crash victim Tk 5.0 million as compensation

The Supreme Court has upheld a High Court Division order that asked Green Line Paribahan to pay a road crash victim Tk 5.0 million in damages.

A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, did so, rejecting an appeal by the company seeking a stay on the order.

On May 14 last year, the High Court asked Green Line Paribahan to explain within four weeks why Rasel should not be paid Tk 10 million as compensation.

That order follows a writ petition filed by Umme Kulsum Smrity, a lawyer and former reserved seat MP.

Around 10 months later on March 12, it came up with the latest compensation order, prompting the transport company to file the stay petition.

The case, filed with police, in brief is that on April 28 last year, a bus of Green Line Paribahan hit the private car Rasel was driving, from behind at Hanif Flyover in Dhaka's Jatrabarhi. He got down and signaled the bus to stop but bus driver Kabir Hossain drove his coach over him and fled the scene.

Police had managed to detain the driver and seized the bus from near National Press Club in the capital.
