RANGPUR, Dec 02: The tomato plants across the district and its adjacent areas have grown well, predicting an excellent yield of the vegetable during this season.
This year vegetable cultivators in the region have geared up the farming of different early winter vegetables including tomato and made vigorous efforts to get expected output as well as handsome profit from the sale of their produce.
Abbas Mia, a grower of tomato at Pairaband area in Mithapukur upazila said he prefers farming vegetables due to high profit in comparison with many other crops.
He cultivated tomato on 40 decimals of land this season. During last few years he has been getting a satisfactory yield as well as good profit from farming of the vegetable, he said.
Idris Ali, another tomato grower of Nabdiganj village in Pirgachha upazila said a good number of peasants of his area are showing their interest in the farming of tomato than the cultivation of other crops owing to good profit.
He has cultivated the vegetable on 30 decimals of land this season and is expecting plentiful yield, he said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources said timely supply of sufficient agri-inputs and a conducive weather condition have made the growers of the region hopeful of attaining a good production of tomato this year.
Satisfactory prices as well as huge demand have encouraged the cultivators to cultivate it on a large scale this year. Use of modern technology also enhanced its production in recent years, sources further said.
The department has taken various steps including timely supply of necessary agri-inputs and advices to increase production of vegetables including tomato across the region.
Due to early harvest growers get higher price of their produces which also encourage them to cultivate vegetables plentifully, sources added.
