Tomato farming goes on in full swing in Bogura

BOGURA, Nov 19:  Tomato cultivation is going on in full swing in the district.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office said farmers some 380 hectares of land have already been brought under the production of the winter delicacy.

DAE officials said the area may exceed 1,000 hectares of land this season.

Some farmers have already started harvesting the item.

Each kg of raw tomato is being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 60 while Tk 90 to Tk 100 ripen one.

Amzad Hossain of Shibganj upazila said tomato cultivation is popular in the area. High market prices encourage the grassroots growers to bring new land under tomato farming.

Sources said some hybrid varieties - Bahar, Manik and Raton - are being grown in Dhunot, Adamdighi, Dupchanchia, Sherpur, Nandigram, Kahaloo, Shubganj, Gabtoly, Shariakandi, Sonatola and Sadar upazilas.

In a recent visit this correspondent found farmers were passing busy time in the tomato fields.

Growers expect per hectare tomato production around two to three tonnes.

Deputy Director of DAE Pratul Chndra Sarker said tomato cultivation is expanding in the district. Many farmers have attained financial solvency by growing the item every winter.
