Tobacco causes 0.16m death every year: Minister

Tobacco causes over 0.16 million death every year in the country, 25.54 per cent of adult men and 9.68 per cent women, State Minister for Healthand Family Welfare Zahid Malek said.

"Each year at least 1,61,200 people dies of various tobacco related diseases including cancer, stroke, heart attacks," the minister said this quoting the statistics of The Tobacco Atlas.

The health minister came up with the remarks while talking to the reporters at his ministry on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The number of deaths from the adverse impact of tobacco consumption will continue to rise if an integrated tobacco control policy was not implemented in this condition, he said.

The government has taken different measures to control the consumption of tobacco including imposing tax and formation of management policy for tobacco control, said the report.

He also inaugurated a Television spot 'Bishdhoa' on adverse impact of tobacco on human body which will be put on air by television channels for six weeks.
