TIB urges to review drafted government employees act

The Transparency international, Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the authorities concerned to review some provisions of drafted act for government employees.

The watchdog made the call through a statement on Friday to ensure a skilled and accountable public administration.

Describing some provisions as controversial, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman considered the draft act as obstacle for ensuring transparency and accountability in government job.

He also expressed grave concern as the sub-committee, formed by the Cabinet Division, proposed some ‘controversial’ provisions in its report after analysing the drafted Government Employees Act 2017.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman urged to review the provision of taking permission for arresting government official accused in criminal offence.

The TIB executive director said these provisions contradicts with the country’s constitution.

"It could hamper the access of anti corruption commission in taking steps against corrupted government officials," he said.

He said according to the drafted act a government official will not be sacked immediately if he/she gets one year imprisonment.

The TIB official said the drafted act allows a government official to be acquitted from imprisonment order or dismissal order

He urged the government to make the draft law public as people of the country could get opportunities to provide their rightful feedback on it.
