Three transport workers remanded on sexual harassment charge

A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted three-day remands of each of three transport workers who allegedly sexually harassed a female student of a private university in a running bus on April 21.

The accused were identified as Md Roman Ali, driver of a Turag Paribahan bus, his assistant Nayan Ali and bus contractor Monir Hossain.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after the investigation officer of the case, sub-inspector Tapas Kumar of Gulshan Police Station sought seven-day remands to interrogate them.

The trio was arrested on Monday from city's Saidabad area. The student of Uttara University got in a bus of Turag Paribahan from Badda Link Road around 1:00pm for going to her university.

Later, the other passengers of the bus got off from the bus at Natun Bazar bus stop while the helper, contractor and driver of the bus started sexually assaulting the victim, according to the case statement.

At one stage, the victim managed to fend them off and jumped off the bus.

Earlier, the teachers and students of Uttara University protested against the harassment and threatened to go for tougher protest if the concerned authorities fail to detain the culprits in short time, reports UNB.
