Three more die in ‘gunfights’ during anti-drug raids

Three more people - two in Satkhira and one in Mymensingh - have been killed in gunfights involving security forces amid the ongoing crackdown on drugs across the country.

A Satkhira union-level Jubo League leader was among two detainees killed in an alleged shootout after they were taken on a police raid.

A suspect in several drug cases was killed during an alleged shootout with police in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka.

‘Drug traffickers’ have been reportedly killed in ‘shootouts’ nearly every night since security forces launched an anti-drug campaign in May under instructions from the prime minister.

Nearly 200 people have been killed in similar incidents since the start of the crackdown, bdnews24 reported.

SATKHIRA

Two people, including a local Jubo League leader, have been killed in an alleged shootout in Satkhira’s Sadar Upazila after they were detained and taken on a raid by police.

The shootout occurred in the Badshah Union’s Koyar Bil area at around 3:30 am on Sunday, said Sadar Police OC Maruf Ahmed.

The dead have been identified as Abdul Kalam Azad and Delwar Hossain.

The two were detained by Detective Branch police in possession of two kilograms of marijuana and 20 bottles by Phensedyl, the OC said.

“During the interrogation they told us that a large shipment of drugs had come in from across the border.”

Police then took them on a raid to the Koyar Bil area to recover the shipment at around 3:30 am, Ahmed said.

“The criminals opened fire as soon as police arrived in the area. Police returned fire. At one point, Kalam and Delwar attempted to flee and were caught in the crossfire. The drug traffickers eventually fled and Kalam and Delwar were found shot.”

The two were taken to the Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared them dead, the OC said.

Five local police and DB police personnel were injured in the shootout and received first aid, the OC said.

Police say they recovered three kilograms of marijuana, 20 bottles of Phensedyl, a firearm, ammunition and four mobile phones from the scene.

MYMENSINGH

A suspect in several drug cases has been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka.

The deceased has been identified as Murad Akondo, 30.

He was accused in four cases, which includes drug trafficking charges, said Bhaluka Police Station OC Firoze Talukdar.

Police conducted a raid in the upazila’s Uthura village at around 2:00 am on Sunday after receiving news that drug dealers were dividing up their shares in the area, he said.

“The drug dealers noticed the police presence and opened fire and fled when police retaliated. One person was found shot.”

He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Two police personnel were hurt in the incident and received first aid, he added.
