Three more die of dengue today

Three more deaths were reported from three separate districts on Tuesday as the entire country remains in the grip of dengue fever.

At Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Monwara Begum, 75, succumbed to dengue early in the morning, local media reported.

With the latest, the number of people who died from the mosquito-borne disease at the hospital reached 15.

Hailing from Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur district, Monwara used to live at Mirpur-2 in the capital.

In Rangpur, a minor girl at Rangpur Medical College Hospital died from the fever in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Riyana, 3, daughter of Ashraful Islam hailing from Gaibandha’s Palashbari upazila, reports UNB.

Dr Saifuzzaman, spokesperson of the hospital, said the child was admitted to the hospital on August 3 with dengue. After four days of treatment, she died at around 8:00am.

She was diagnosed with dengue after returning from Dhaka recently, he added.

In Dinajpur, a teenage boy lost his battle to dengue at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in the early hours.

Rabiul Islam, 17, of Ranishankail upazila in Thakurgaon district, died around 5:30am, said ward master Masud Rana. He was taken to the hospital on July 30.

Currently, 47 dengue patients are admitted to the medical college hospital and all of them recently returned from Dhaka, he said.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), total of 2,065 people were infected with dengue in 24 hours till Monday morning.

Of them, 1159 were infected in the capital alone and nine of them were suffering from dengue hemorrhagic while two others from dengue shock syndrome. 

A total of 27,437 people were hospitalised with dengue since 1 January.

At least 7,658 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at different hospitals now, while the rest were discharged after treatment. Currently, a total of 4,962 patients were undergoing treatment in different hospitals in Dhaka, it said.

During the period, 18 dengue patients died, all in the capital, the DGHS said although the unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.
