Two deaths in an hour as Covid situation spans out of control

The Covid-19 situation is deteriorating fast in the country as almost three persons in a minute are being infected with the deadly viral strains, officials and physicians said.

Bangladesh recorded more than two deaths in each hour, according to the official statistics in the last 24 hours.

The grim statistics of the new coronavirus infections came on Tuesday when the tiny nation of around 170 million witnessed the deadliest day registering the highest single-day infections and fatalities.

On Tuesday, a total of 3,862 new cases and 53 deaths were reported across the country. It took the tally of total infections and fatalities to 94,481 and 1,262.

In the latest update on the pandemic, DGHS additional director general (administration) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana said a total of 17,214 samples were tested in 61 labs across the country in the last 24 hours to 8:00am Tuesday.

With the tests, a total of 533,717 samples have so far been tested across the country and the infection rate rose to 17.70 per cent.

Of the tests, some 3,862 samples were found COVID-19 positive along with 53 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, she said.

With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 94,481 and 1,262 respectively, she said.

Thirty of the latest deaths were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by 14 in Chattogram, four in Rajshahi, three in Khulna, one each in Barishal and Mymensingh divisions, Dr Sultana said.

Of them, one was between 11-20 years old, three were between 21-30 years old, two between 31-40, nine within 41-50, 19 within 51-60, 10 between 61-70, eight between 71-80 and another was between 81-90 years old, she said.

Simultaneously, some 2,237 people recovered from the respiratory disease, taking the overall number of recovery to 36,264, according to her.

The DGHS sources said 62,546 people remained in both home and institutional quarantine while 10,302 others in isolation as of May, 2020

The bulk of infections and deaths came on the 17th day of easing lockdown by the government allowing public transports and offices operate since May 31.

Globally, more than 8.1 million people were infected with the novel coronavirus and 439,838 died until Sunday 7:30 pm, according to Worldometer data.
