Three people were killed in separate 'gunfights' in Bogura and Jashore districts on Wednesday.

In Bogura, a gunfight between two rival gangs of criminals took place on a bridge near Sherpur upazila’s Bhabanipur Bazar at around 1:00am, said Sanatan Chakrabarty, additional superintendent of Bogra Sadar Circle Police.

Informed of the gun battle, a police team rushed to the scene and found the two lying on the ground with bullet wounds, said the police official.

“They died on the way to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.”

The deceased have been identified as Dhanesh Sarkar alias Sukumar Sarkar, 38, and Afzal Hossain, 55, reports bdnews24.

Afzal was named in 20 cases and Dhanesh in 11 for various crimes, according to the police.

Two guns and two rounds of bullets were recovered from the scene, added the police official.

Meanwhile in Jashore, another man wanted in a series of cases was killed in a so-called shootout during a police drive.

The incident occurred near a brick field in Jashore Sadar Upazila’s Mahidia area in the early hours of Wednesday, said Kotwali Police OC Moniruzzaman.

The dead man, identified as Shishir Ghosh, 30, was implicated in 16 cases, with the charges, including murder and extortion.

He was detained while in possession of an explosive from the town's Shankarpur on Tuesday evening, according to police.

Shishir later divulged information on the storage of illegal arms during interrogation, said the OC. Police subsequently launched a drive to recover the arms with the suspect in tow.

"On arriving at the scene, Shishir's associates opened fire on the police and tried to snatch him away from the law enforcers. Police consequently retaliated, leading the criminals to flee the scene at one point. Shishir was then found lying on the ground with bullet wounds."

The wounded suspect was subsequently rushed to the Jashore General Hospital where doctors on duty declared him dead, said OC Moniruzzaman.

Police recovered a gun and two rounds of bullets from the spot, according to the OC.
