Three die in Kushtia, Munshiganj, Cumilla ‘shootouts’

Two suspected drug pedlars and a suspected robber were killed in separate shootouts with police in Kushtia, Munshiganj and Cumilla districts in the early hours of Sunday.

In Kushtia, suspected drug pedlar Nazmul Malitha, 40, son of Miraj Malitha of Taragunia area in Daulatpur upazila, who was accused in several cases, was killed in a reported shootout with police at Shaldah area of Sadar upazila.

Being informed about a gunfight between two groups of drug traders, a team of police conducted the drive in the area.

Sensing presence of police, the drug pedlars skipped infighting to attack police, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

At one point, Nazmul got shot.

He was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, as per a UNB report.

Four policemen were also injured in the skirmish, said the OC adding that they recovered 500 yaba pills, a foreign-made pistol, two rounds of bullets and two magazines from the spot.

In Munshiganj, Humayun Bepari, 30, son of late Mohon Bepari of Kalirchar village and a suspected robber, who was accused in six cases, was killed in a reported shootout with police in Taleshwar area in Sadar upazila at around 2:00am.

Police arrested Humayun from Charmuktarpur area at around 11:30pm on Saturday, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Acting on information, they conducted a drive along with Humayun to recover firearms.

When, the team reached the area, accomplices of 'Humayun Bahini' opened fire on them and tried to snatch away Humayun, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

Humayun was shot during the gunfight, said the OC.

He soon succumbed to his injuries when taken to Munshiganj General Hospital, reports UNB.

In Cumilla, Mangal Miah, 55, son of Babor Ali of Bittola village in Daudkandi upazila, and accused in 21 cases, was killed in a reported shootout with police in Pirchar area of Chandina upazila at around 3:30am.

Abul Foysal, officer-in-charge of Chandina Police Station, said that police also recovered a light gun, two rounds of bullets, 500 pieces of contraband yaba tablets and 50 bottles of phensedyl syrup from the spot.
