Three BGB men face rape charges in Bandarban

A case was filed against three members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and another civilian for allegedly raping two indigenous minor girls in Lama upazila of Bandarban.

The two minor girls of Tripura community filed the case on Friday over the incident that took place on Wednesday night at Rangati's Tripura Para area of the upazila, reports UNB

The victims, both fifth-graders of Banfur Government Primary School, received necessary medical tests at Bandarban Sadar Hospital.

District Civil Surgeon Dr Aung Swi Prue Marma said a medical board in this regard will be formed on Saturday.

Lama Police Station officer-in-charge Appela Raju Naha said the case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against four people.

"Legal actions will be taken accordingly," he said.

According to the case statement, the victims alleged that they were taken to a nearby jungle from their home in Tripura Para by Jonerong Tripura, late Wednesday.

Local news agencies, quoting the victims, said two BGB members violated them in the jungle and another member helped them to commit the crime.

Jonerong Tripura was the fourth accused in the case as an accomplice to the crime, said the OC.

The victims' relatives, including Lama Upazila Tripura Student Forum President Nelson Tripura, said the girls hid in the jungle for the remainder of the night out of fear.

After they revealed the incident to their family members the next day, the matter was brought to the notice of BGB's Banfur Bazar camp commander.

Later, the camp commander organised an arbitration among local influential people and the victims' family members to settle the issue, locals said.

When asked, Commander of BGB-11 Battalion Lt Col Asaduzzaman said there are no soldiers in the camp with the names of the accused.

The authorities concerned will conduct their own investigation into the matter, the commander added.
