JOYPURHAT, May 27: A good number of people in the district have attained financial solvency by growing Thai guava on commercial basis.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has been providing logistic support to the farmers over the last few years so that the farmers can achieve the desired yield.
Some DAE officials said Thai guava is popular among the growers for high and repeated bumper yield and good market price.
Many grassroots peasants have achieved self-reliance from the cultivation of the tasty fruit, they added.
Local traders said locally-produced Thai guava is also popular in Gaibandha, Naogaon and Bogura districts.
"Thai guava production expanding for lucrative market price," said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.
"Research in various horticultural centres in the region has shown that good quality guava cultivation is possible in the district", the official further said.
Each kg of Thai guava is selling at Tk 70 to Tk 80 in the retail markets and Tk 60 to Tk 65 in the wholesale markets.
DAE officials said, "We have taken an initiative to expand the fruit cultivation in the district."
Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said the soil and weather of the region is favourable for growing varieties of guava. "We motivate growers to farm the Thai guava on more land to make more profit", he added.
