Telecom sector sinking, Jabbar says he is to salvage

The newly-appointed minister for posts, telecommunication and information & communication technology has said that the prime minister has assigned him to salvage the 'sinking telecom sector'.

Mustafa Jabbar also expressed hope that he’ll succeed in the job using his vast experience.

"I have 30 years of experience in the telecommunication and information technology sector. I hope I will be successful in doing so using my experience. If I succeed, the Prime Minister will also succeed," he said.

The minister came up with the remarks on Saturday while talking to reporters after paying tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman placing wreaths at his grave at Tungipara of Gopalganj on Saturday.

Talking about 'loss-making state telecom operator' Teletalk, the minister said private companies are doing businesses here using government's frequency and bandwidth, and Teletalk can do so, too.

"Why cannot we do business? I think there is a flaw somewhere or those in the management could not take decision," he said.

The minister also said he will first identify the problems.

"There's no reason to fail. I think we can do business if we can identify the failures," he said.

UNB says, BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood, Gopalganj District Council Chairman Chowdhury Emdadul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Tareque, district Awami League General Secretary Mahbub Ali Khan were, among others, present.
