A teenage girl died of dengue at Dinajpur General Hospital on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Opi Rani Saha, 17, daughter of Anukul Chandra Roy of Lehemba village in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon district.

Dr AH Anwarul Islam, Thakurgaon district civil surgeon, said Opi was admitted to Thakurgaon Modern Hospital after being diagnosed with dengue and then shifted to Dinajpur following deterioration of her condition on Friday afternoon.

Doctors declared her dead when she was brought to the hospital, he said.

Family sources said Opi was admitted to a coaching centre in the capital for university admission after passing HSC and she returned to her village with fever on August 4, reports UNB.

A total of 2,002 people were hospitalised with dengue in 24 hours until Friday morning, the government said. Of these, 943 cases were reported from Dhaka alone.

Since January, 36,668 patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue and 27,876 made recovery, the government said.

At least 8,763 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals and of them, 5,076 are in Dhaka.

Official data show the death toll as 29 but unofficial estimates suggest the number is higher.
