Non-government teachers and employees on Monday demanded the government nationalise their jobs taking their woes as they were going through a difficult time.

They made the demand at a sit-in programme held in front of the National Press Club in the city.

The teachers and employees under the monthly pay order (MPO) scheme also threatened to continue their agitation programme if their demand is not met immediately.

They said the disparities between the salaries and other benefits of public and private teachers and employees still exit despite doing the same job.

MPO-listed teachers and employees had long been going through a difficult time due to financial constraints, they said, adding that they are deprived of different facilities even 50 years after the country's independence.

They also said from principal to employee of MPO-listed private colleges get only Tk 1,000 as house rent while Tk 500 as medical allowance and 25 per cent festival allowance.

Ten per cent of their salaries deducted every month to the account of Retirement and Welfare Trust and after retirement they get only 6.0 per cent facilities.

Besides, they said, there are uncertainties over getting the benefits even after retirement.

Md Jashim Uddin Ahmed, member secretary of 'Grand Alliance of Teachers and Employees under MPO Expecting to Nationalise Jobs', said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalised 37,000 primary schools in 1973 with increasing the salaries of teachers and employees.

Later, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government also nationalised 26,000 more primary schools in 2013.

Besides, he said, the present government has been providing 20 per cent Boishakhi festival allowance and 5.0 per cent annual increment to MPO-listed teachers and employees since July 2018.

Teachers' leaders Md Main Uddin, Md Shah Alam and Principal Afzal Hossain, among others, were present.
