Expressing satisfaction over the verdict in August 21 grenade attack cases, Law Minister Anisul Huq said Tarique Rahman deserves death penalty as he was the mastermind of the attack.

The minister said the government will file an appeal seeking death penalty for Tarique Rahman and two others, who were jailed for life in the cases.

Anisul Huq came up with the statement on Wednesday minutes after the announcement of the verdict in two cases filed over the attack, report bdnews24.com and BSS.

“It was quite satisfactory as all of the accused of the cases had been sentenced in the verdict,” he added.

After receiving a copy of the verdict, the government will decide on an appeal for the death penalty to the three, Huq said.

The government will seek scaled-up punishments for two others — Harris Chowdhury and BNP leader Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad who along with Tarique were sentenced to life in prison.

Coming down heavily on BNP for not believing in rule of law, he said, “The Awami League government under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina has been relentlessly working to establish the rule of law with holding trail of all the cases. But, the BNP has destroyed the rule of law with not holding trial in such cases.”

A speedy trial tribunal sentenced 19 people, including former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, were awarded death sentence.
