Tangail lemon growers happy with market price

Lemon growers of the district are happy over the present market price of their produce.

Many poor and ultra-poor people in the district have become self-reliant by growing lemon on commercial basis.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, a total of 1,985 hectares of land have been brought under the production of lemon in the district this season.

DAE official sources said Delduar, Mirzapur and Modhupur upazilas are well-known for growing quality lemon. Major portion of the total lemon production comes from these three areas.

A farmer Akkas Ali of Noyarhat village in Fazilhati union under Delduar upazila said he has cultivated lemon on 20 decimals of land. He is making a handsome profit from the sale of his produce.

Another farmer in the Fazilhati area Siddiqur Rahman said he cultivated lemon on 30 decimals of land this season. Last year he got a bumper production of and made a satisfactory profit, which encouraged him to cultivate lemon on a large scale in this season, he added.

100 pieces of lemon is selling at Tk 300 to Tk 600 in the retail market. In the summer season price generally becomes high.

Lemon farming process is easy. It requires low production cost. The popular item can be produced in homestead, main land and even roadside empty spaces.

DAE official sources said lemon is a popular item among the farmers in the district. The department has taken various programme including training, timely supply of inputs to increased production and expand cultivation.
