Take quick steps against Farmers Bank: TIB to government

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged the government to take quick and effective measures against Farmers Bank to return the deposit of Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCCTF).

The corruption watchdog also expressed grave concern as Farmers Bank failed to keep due functions with depositors.

TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said in a statement on Monday, "The failure of Farmers Bank to return deposit of BCCCTF and other depositors after the expiry of the deposits is a deep concern for the whole banking sector”.

The body’s boss urged the government, especially the Bangladesh Bank and the Ministry of Finance, for incorporating quick action to recover Tk 5.08 billon climate fund.

If any delay emerges in releasing the funds for the implementation of climate change adaptation activities, it will further gear up the risk of climate change impact on the venerable regions and population which is not acceptable.

TIB has called upon the government to ensure the transparency and accountability of all the stakeholders involved in managing the fund.

The organisation also emphasised on forming a policy to deal with the BCCCTF.
