Take measures to prevent spread of lumpy skin disease: Fisheries ministry to livestock dept

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has directed the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) to take urgent measures to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle.

At the same time, the DLS also has been directed to take necessary measures for the treatment of cattle affected by this disease.

The ministry issued a letter of instruction in this regard on Wednesday (June 18) and sent it to the department.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is sourced by infection of cattle or water buffalo with the poxvirus Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV).

The letter of instruction directed to form a Veterinary Medical Team consisting of an Upazila Livestock Officer or a Veterinary Surgeon or a Livestock Extension Officer and a Deputy Assistant Livestock Officer or a Veterinary Field Assistant or Field Assistant (AI) in each union of the affected area.

 The medical team has been instructed to ensure on-the-spot inspection of every cattle infected with lumpy skin disease.

Besides, the divisional and district livestock officers have been given the responsibility to monitor the medical work round the clock. If necessary, the livestock officers  employees from the adjoining districts or upazilas of the affected districts have also been instructed to be assigned to the medical team.

 At the same time, the concerned livestock offices  have been asked to send to the ministry a list every day containing the name and mobile number and address of the owners of the cattle under treatment

It was reported that in Sadar, Khansama and Bochaganj upazilas of Dinajpur district, there has recently been an outbreak of lumpy skin disease in cattle.
