Syed Ashraf’s first namaz-e-janaza held at Jaitya Sangsad

The first namaz-e-janaza of Syed Ashraf was held at the South Plaza of the Jaitya Sangsad on Sunday

The first namaz-e-janaza of Syed Ashraful Islam, former general secretary of the Awami League, took place at the South Plaza of the Jaitya Sangsad on Sunday morning.

People from all strata of life, including President Abdul Hamid, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, Chief Whip ASM Firoz, Ministers, Awami League leaders and others from different political parties, noted personalities, attended the funeral prayer held at 10:34 am.

Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraf, also an AL Presidium member, was given the 'Guard of Honor' after the janaza. The body was earlier taken there from the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) at 9:30 am.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, and Awami League leaders paid last tributes to Syed Ashraf by placing floral wreaths on his coffin.

Later, on behalf of the AL, its President Sheikh Hasina, flanked by party leaders, paid last respects to him.

Hundreds of thousands of his colleagues, supporters, and well-wishers converged on the Parliament Complex to pray for the departed soul.

Son of national leader and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's close associate Syed Nazrul Islam, Syed Ashraf died of lung cancer at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok on Thursday at the age of 67.

The body of Syed Ashraf was brought back home on Saturday evening.

An AL delegation, led by party general secretary Obaidul Quader, received the body of the AL former general secretary at the airport.

Ashraf's second janaza was held at Sholakia Eidgaon Maidan in his home district Kishoreganj at 12 noon and the third at Anjuman Eidgah in Mymensigh will be at 2:00pm.

The mortal remains will be flown back to Dhaka from Mymensingh and the AL leader will be laid to eternal rest at Banani Graveyard after Asr prayers.

Syed Ashraf was elected a member of parliament (MP) from Kishoreganj-1 constituency five times - 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014, and 2018.

Despite his absence during the latest general election, the AL leader came out successful from there for the fith straight time.

Syed Ashraf, however, could not take oath as a member of the latest and 11th parliament as he was undergoing treatment at the Bangkok hospital.
