The High Court on Wednesday ordered 11 loan defaulters of the People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited (PLFSL) to surrender to the court their passport, or NID card if they don't have a passport.
Among the 11 borrowers, two sisters arrested by members of the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, may be released from the custody of police by depositing their passports, also read the High Court (HC) order.
All the 11 defaulters have also been asked to deposit 5 per cent of the loan within the next 30 days get their loan worth Tk 1.96 billion rescheduled.
An HC bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the order after hearing the issue.
The loan receivers are--- Khairul Hasan, Kohenoor Matbar, Masud Matbar, Sharmin Ahmed, Md Abdus Sobhan, Tania Ahmed, Ataur Rahman, Shirin Ahmed, Sonia Ahmed, Shahiduzzaman and Ashraf Khan.
Among them, Sharmin Ahmed (42) and Tania Ahmed (37), two daughters of former director of People's Leasing Khabir Uddin, were picked up by RAB from the Shahjalal International Airport early Wednesday. RAB claimed that they were "escaping" to Canada after coming to Dhaka a month ago.
The same HC bench on March 7 this year summoned 64 loan defaulters of the People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited for not complying with its order to reschedule their defaulted loans with the lending company.
The defaulters had been asked to appear before the court on April 11, 12 and 19 this year, in failing which the court will issue an arrest warrant against them, said the court.
Nine of the 11 people, who are the same family members, appeared in the court in April complying with its order. However, Sharmin Ahmed and Tania Ahmed did not appear in the court.
In these circumstances the court issued arrest warrant against the persons, including the two daughters of Mr Khabir Uddin who didn't appear before it.
The two sisters, who had been staying in Canada since 2003, took loan of Tk 660 million but never paid back, said Khandaker Al Moin, RAB's Legal and Media wing director, while addressing a press briefing at RAB media centre in the city on Wednesday.
After their arrest RAB officials produced them in the company bench of the HC.
