SIRAJGANJ, Mar 15: Students of a government primary school in Royganj upazila of Sirajganj district have been facing untold suffering as they cannot use a bridge for lack of approach roads.
Sources said the bridge was constructed in 2015 with a view to creating smooth communication for thousands of people including students. But the bridge is lying unused for more than four years in absence of approach roads on both sides.
According to the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management (MRDM) sources, the 20-foot bridge was built in 2014-2015 fiscal year under the rural bridge construction programme.
Headmistress of Bengnai Government Primary School Umme Zannat said most of the students cannot attend classes in the rainy season as they have to cross a water body to come to the school.
The authority concerned should take immediate steps in this connection, she added.
President of the school managing committee Abdur Rahim said before construction of the concrete bridge, villagers erected a bamboo bridge, which is no longer there at all but the commuters have to suffer due to lack of approach roads.
Chairman of Pangashi union Parishad Abdus Salam said approach roads of the bridge will be constructed in the coming fiscal year.
