He has neither a job nor a business. Nevertheless, he has Tk 8.3 million in the bank.

That is not all—he also has flats and lands in Chattogram port city.

Being just a student, that Rabiul Islam has so much wealth has raised eyebrows.

Police say he has become rich from nowhere by getting involved in yaba business. Behind his student identity, he would deal in yaba business.

Hailing from Najirparha village under Teknaf upazila town in Cox’s Bazar, he was a public administration student of Chittagong University.

Chattogram’s Detective Branch (DB) of Police, and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) unearthed this while investigating a yaba recovery case.

In end-March 2018, the DB gave the signal for a Pajero vehicle to stop at Fakinnirhat under Karnaphuli in Chittagong.

The driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind, but the person – his name is Jasim Uddin –inside could not.

The DB arrested him in possession of 50,000 pieces of yaba tablets, and also seized the vehicle with a government sticker and a VIP flag stand.

A case was filed with Karnaphuli police station under the narcotics control act.

In his confession, Jasim told the court that Faridul, a brother of Rabiul, would send yaba drugs from Teknaf to Chattogram.

Rabiul, living in the port city, would receive the drugs and send to different places of the country, including Dhaka.

He masterminded the use of the government vehicle in the yaba business to evade the suspicious eyes of law enforcers.

Former DB police inspector Mohammad Kamruzzaman investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet before the court naming six persons, including Rabiul.

As he could not identify five of them, including the driver, the court ordered an investigation to be conducted by the PBI.

Now an inspector at Kotowali police station, Kamruzzaman said Rabiul would deal in yaba drugs behind his university student identity. Much effort was given, but he could not be arrested.

The case is now under investigation of the PBI.

Police say they came to know about Rabiul’s bank account through Bangladesh Bank. He has a bank account with a private bank in Teknaf.

Opened on May 28, 2015, local media reports say, the account having Tk 5.327 million showed its last transaction on April 2, 2018.

Rabiul showed the land business as his income source. He has another account having Tk 3.0 million at the same bank.

His school-going brother also has a bank account, in which there is Tk 0.21 million.

The case is now under investigations of the PBI.

Chattogram PBI inspector Nur Ahmed said that they cannot know in details about Rabiul’s wealth as long as he is not arrested.

Efforts are on to arrest him, he said, adding that even none of his family is now living at his village home, giving it a deserted look.

Asked whether any punitive action has been taken against Rabiul for his involvement in yaba business,  Amir Mohammad Nasrullah, chairman of Chittagong University’s public administration department, said the process is on under the purview of the university rules.
