Stress on awareness building to reduce disaster risks

The International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed across the country on Saturday, stressing the need for creating awareness and ensuring active participation of the people of all strata alongside the government and non-government organisations in all programmes to reduce disaster risks.

The theme of this year’s International Day for Disaster Reduction was “Reducing Economics Losses”.

Marking the day, a discussion was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Secretary of the ministry Md Shah Kamal in the chair.

Maya said the government gave importance to ‘Disaster Risk Reduce’ (DRR) instead of distributing relief in the last 10 years, reports BSS.

Bangladesh is now a role model in combating natural disasters, he added.

He said the government is implementing a number of effective measures to reduce risks of different natural calamities.

Maya urged all to be alert to tackle disasters like thunderbolt and earthquake.

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Chairman Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, Department of Disaster Management Director General Syed MA Hashim Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brigadier General Ali Ahmad Khan, among others, addressed the discussion.
