Stop use of polythene to protect environment, says minister

The use of polythene should be stopped to protect the environment from pollution in the long-run, said the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin.

“The use of harmful polythene bags should be stopped for our own interest and to protect the environment. The harmful polythene is not biodegradable even after hundreds of years beneath the soil,” the minister said on Saturday.

Polythene seriously pollutes water and soil. Besides, polythene can enter the human body in various ways and can cause cancer and other deadly diseases, the minister mentioned.

“As an alternative, the use of jute bags should be increased, said the minister underlined plantation of more trees and to stop cutting down hills and filling up necessary water bodies.

The environment minister made those remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of a bridge over the Juri River at West Juri Union in Moulvibazar district on Saturday.
