Snap polls depend on govt decision: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said arrangement of snap election depends on the government decision.

"It is government who decides over snap election. We'll find 90 days to complete the election. If the government decides, we'll be able to do so," he told reporters replying to a question if the Election Commission has preparation for arrangement of snap polls.

Earlier, the CEC held a meeting with European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Rensje Teerink from 4pm to 4:30pm in the city's Nirbachan Bhaban.

CEC Nurul Huda said, "The EU has full trust in us. We've also assured that election-friendly environment will prevail. We're determined to hold election in fair manner."

According to a UNB report, he said the EU ambassador wanted to know if the election voting machines (EVMs) will be used in the parliamentary elections. "I told that it is not possible and we're not prepared for that. Some political parties opposed it (use of EVMs). This is why, we'll not invite any controversy," he said.

The EU during the meeting assured that it will provide supports to the Election Commission, the CEC said.
