GOPALGANJ, Aug 30: Farmers of Borashi union under Gopalganj Sadar have benefited by growing short-duration snake bean (Borboti).
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, sources said, a total of 72 hectares of land have been brought under snake bean production with the production target of 545 tonnes.
About 2,500 farmers are involved with the vegetable farming, sources added.
Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer of Goaplganj Sadar, said snake bean cultivation is profitable. High demand and good market price encourage the peasants to grow the vegetable on a large scale.
Farmers make good profit from snake bean than other vegetables. Low production cost is one of the main reasons for the popularity of snake bean among the cultivators, sources added.
Swarup Chandra Biswas of Khatra village under Sadar upazila said he is cultivating snake bean on 0.7 decimal of land this season spending Tk 5,000.
The grower said he has already started harvesting the produce and is expecting to make a profit of Tk 20,000.
Abdul Kadir Sarker, additional deputy director of DAE said the department is providing all necessary support to the snake gourd growers.
Some local NGOs also support the peasants by providing seeds and other inputs.
