Small number of internet users experiencing slower speed

A small number of internet users in the country are experiencing slower speed due to emergency maintenance work of submarine cable which started on Monday, according to the latest update of internet service providers.

However, the majority of internet subscribers are not experiencing the slowdown as the internet service providers have taken temporary measures to provide smooth service.

Earlier on October 29, they said internet subscribers would witness a slower connection speed from Nov 2-4 due to emergency maintenance work of submarine cable.

Talking to The Financial Express, Ahmed Junayed, vice president of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), said, “Now both Chennai and Tuas PFE have powered down and observing i2i traffics is down at 03:44 UTC from November 2, 2020”.

“Cable ship started the i2i Submarine cable diversion activity at Tuas, Singapore and it is under progress”, he said.

i2i cable maintenance started yesterday (Nov 2) at 9:50am, he added.

Some of the country's IIGs (International Internet Gateways) connect with Singapore via Chennai, India as an alternative route. There is a submarine cable run by Indian Airtel. The cable is being repaired.

During the peak hours, internet users are likely to face more congestion than the off-peak hours, Mr Junayed added.

Bangladesh got connected to its first submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 in 2005. The country is connected with Singapore in different ways through this.
