Six pro-AL teachers assaulted in scuffles at JU

Six pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) (anti-VC group) were assaulted during a scuffle with another faction of pro-AL teachers (who support the Vice-Chancellor) at the transport gate on the campus on Tuesday.

Witnesses said the anti-VC group teachers tried to obstruct operation of staff bus on the campus around 4:00am as part of their previously announced daylong strike.

The supporter group of the VC also went to the spot and locked into a scuffle with the anti-VC group when the six teachers were allegedly assaulted. The anti-VC group teachers submitted a memorandum to the VC demanding justice for the assault of their fellows and later in the morning besieged the academic building around 8:00am.

They also threatened to launch movement demanding VC's resignation if the university authorities fail to take action against the attackers by 4:00pm.

Earlier on Monday, anti-VC group teachers, led by university's former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, called for a daylong strike on the campus on Tuesday protesting what they said the violation of act of the university by incumbent Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam.

They alleged the vice-chancellor has recently withdrawn provosts of nine halls which is illegal and violation of the university act.

They also alleged that according to the university act, a syndicate meeting should be held every month but the present VC has failed to call any syndicate meeting in the last three months.

They also said Farzana Islam cancelled the syndicate meeting which was scheduled to be held on April 12, reports UNB.
