A court in Narsingdi on Monday convicted six people and sentenced them to life imprisonment in a case filed over killing a trader in 2003.
The convicts are Anwar Hossain, 32, Mosharraf Hossain, 35, Firoz Miah, 40, Zilhas alias Juhash, 30, Ataur Rahman, 50, and Akbar Ali, 42, of Kurerpar village in Sadar upazila.
Of them, Mosharraf and Firoz were tried in absentia.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, the body of Golap Hossain, a trader, was found in 10 pieces on the bank of the Brahmmaputra River in Kurerpar area on January 21, 2003, three days after he went missing.
Victim's brother filed a case with Sadar Police Station in this connection.
Police arrested the convicts and they made confessional statements before the court.
According to UNB, police submitted a charge-sheet against seven people.
After examining the records and witnesses, Narsingdi Additional District and Session's Judge AKM Mozammel Haque Chowdhury handed down the verdict acquitting an accused as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.
