Workers Party Chairman Rashed Khan Menon speaks at a webinar presided over by Communist Party of Bangladesh (M-L) General Secretary Dilip Barua on Tuesday

Speakers during a virtual seminar on Tuesday praised the stance of China and Bangladesh on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Students and youth leaders suggest that military bloc NATO cease to exist as its rival Warsaw Pact is dead now.

On the contrary, NATO has been expanding and disrupting peace and stability in the world, they say.

The speakers say the newly-formed security alliance Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or QUAD is another NATO in Asia in a different name.

They were speaking at the virtual seminar styled 'Imperialist powers including USA are creating instability: Youth should oppose it'.

The Bangladesh-China Silk Road Forum organised the virtual event.

At the programme, Workers Party chairman Rashed Khan Menon says QUAD is a new NATO in the Asian region.

He urges the country's youth to come up against US imperialism.

The US is using Ukraine to expand NATO but it is not helping Ukraine ultimately, the politician continues.

He says the US is putting pressure on Bangladesh to join the QUAD alliance alongside imposing sanctions on Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Mr Menon says he does not support all activities of RAB but sanctions on RAB spell sanctions on Bangladesh.

Communist Party of Bangladesh (M-L) General Secretary Dilip Barua, who presided over the event, says NATO was created in reply to Warsaw Pact, adding that there is no more Warsaw, but NATO has been expanding.

"Youths in Bangladesh have a historical role in opposing imperialism. They should strongly oppose US imperialism now," he utters.

Mr Barua says what is happening in Ukraine is being created by the US allies. "The US and its allies are making profits from Ukraine conflicts."

He says China has been dealing with the issue pragmatically and adds that "We support it".

The former minister exhorts youths and students to protest war and imperialism.

Jubo Andolon president Mushahid Ahmed says the US has been destabilising the world and disturbing global peace since the World War-II.

QUAD was formed to stop China's growth and prosperity and creating chaos in Asia, he adds.

Juan Huang, deputy secretary of Communist Youth League of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, says China does not support any party in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

China has rather urged both parties to come to the negotiating table, she adds.

Jatiya Jubo Jote president Rokonuzzaman says the US is still pursuing the cold-war mentality, adding that the expansion of NATO is a clear indication of the US hegemony. China-based Bangladeshi journalist Saiyedul Islam says the US is destroying world peace and stability using Ukraine. By destroying one after another country, he adds, the USA is actually profiting from war. Bangladesh Chhatra Andolon president Eunus Sikder Emon also urges students to oppose US imperialism. Jatiya Juba Oikya president Khairul Alam discounts any necessity of NATO as he supports China, India and Bangladesh's stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.

Taseen Riasat Alam, a Bangladeshi student studying in China, moderated the discussion.
