NILPHAMARI, Oct 06: Harvest of short-duration BRI-71 paddy is going on in full swing in the district.
The newly-harvested paddy has already appeared in the local market and is selling at Tk 1,000 per maund.
Sources from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said BRI-71 paddy cultivation is gaining popularity across the district.
Some 80,570 hectares of land were brought under the farming of the paddy in all the six upazilas in the district.
Our Bogura correspondent adds: Farmers of Sariakandi, Sonatola and Dhunot upazilas of the district are passing busy time to transplant short-duration Gainja paddy seedlings.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), some 9,000 hectares of land will bring under the farming of Gainja to produce 7,000 tonnes of yield.
Seedling transplantation is going on in full swing across the district amid available field labourers and good weather.
Gainja growers can harvest the paddy after 70 to 90 days after plantation.
Some Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000 is needed to grow paddy in a bigha of land and profit around Tk 12,000 to Tk 15,000 can be achieved.
Sariakandi upazila agriculture officer Shahiduzzaman said Gainja paddy cultivation is profitable.
It ensures good production as well, he added.
