Sheikh Russel’s 59th birthday to be observed on Tuesday

The 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, youngest son of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be observed on Tuesday.

Sheikh Russel was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi and the name 'Russel' was given by Bangabandhu himself.

Russel was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975. At that time, he was a fourth-grader student at University Laboratory School.

The Cabinet Division last year declared October 18, the birthday of Sheikh Russel, as Sheikh Russel Day under the category "Ka".

The theme of this year's 'Sheikh Russel Day' is 'Sheikh Russel Nirmalar Protik Duranta Pranbanta Nirvik'.

According to BSS, government bodies, Awami League and its associate bodies, and different socio-cultural organisations will observe various programmes at national and international levels to mark the day.

Awami League leaders and workers will place wreaths at the graves of Sheikh Russel and other martyrs of the August 15, 1975 carnage at Banani graveyard here at 9:00 am on Tuesday.

Fateha, Milad and doa mahfil will also be offered there, said a press release.

The day will also be observed at Bangladesh missions abroad while different dailies will publish supplements highlighting the significance of the day.

In separate messages on Monday, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Sheikh Russel on the eve of his 59th birthday.

They also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Russel and recalled his memories with due respect.

Both the president and the prime minister wished all the success for the programmes taken for the birthday celebration of Russel.
