Shamsul Haque Tuku elected deputy speaker of parliament

Shamsul Haque Tuku, a member of parliament (MP) from Pabna-1 constituency, has become the new deputy speaker of the Bangladesh National Parliament.

The decision was made at the start of the 29th parliamentary session on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury called for nominations and Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury put forward the name of Tuku, a former state minister for home affairs. The nomination was supported by Md Qamrul Islam, a former state minister for law.

The proposal was then passed by a voice vote.

Later, President M Abdul Hamid administered the oath of office to Deputy Speaker Shamsul Huq Tuku at the President's chamber at the parliament, according to BSS.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, among others, were present during the oath-taking.
