Seven get life term for raping Bangladeshi woman in India

An Indian court has sentenced seven people to life term imprisonment for raping a 22-year-old Bangladeshi woman.

The special court in India’s Bengaluru gave the order on Friday in a case filed over the sexual assault that took place in May last year, according to Indian news agencies.

The court found 11 accused, out of 12 arrested, guilty. It sentenced Chand Miya, Mohammed Rifakdul Islam, Mohammed Alamin Hossien, Rakibul Islam, Mohammed Babu Sheik, Mohammed Dalim and Azim Hossain to rigorous imprisonment for life.

Taniya Khan, a female aide of the accused, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Another accused, Mohammed Jamal, was sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Meanwhile, two other accused were convicted for offences under the Foreigners Act for 9 months of simple imprisonment. One of the accused was acquitted as he turned approved.

Last year, a video went viral after a woman was subjected to sexual assault.

Bengaluru police found out that the incident was reported in Kanaka Nagar in Bengaluru city. Indian police arrested all the accused and booked them under appropriate sections of their laws.

According to Indian media, the police, who had arrested 12 persons, found that 11 persons were illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and one turned out to be local.
