Seven Covid deaths, 1,611 cases reported in 24 hours 

Bangladesh has recorded 1,611 cases of Covid-19 in a day, taking the overall tally of infections to 1,988,101. 

The death toll from the disease climbed by seven in 24 hours to 29,195, according to the latest government data released on Friday. 

As many as 9,580 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 16.82 per cent, higher than the average rate since the beginning of the pandemic. 

Among the eight divisions, Dhaka logged the highest number of cases, with 1,128 infections, reports bdnews24.com. 

Another 890 people recovered from the illness nationwide, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,911,367. 

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 96.14 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.47 per cent. 

Globally, over 551.28 million people have been infected by the coronavirus and 6.34 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.  

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
