Section 57 goes, but cases to continue

Proceedings of the filed cases under Section 57 will continue although the cabinet has approved in principle the draft of Digital Security Bill repealing the section in question.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque said this on Monday when his attention was drawn about the Cabinet's approval of the Digital Security Bill-2018 repealing section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

He was speaking at a programme arranged to launch two books -'Muktijuddhe Prothom Protirudh (First Resistance in the War of Liberation)' and Muktijuddhe Pulisher Bhumika (Role of police in Liberation war) at the media centre of police headquarters in the afternoon.

According to the police chief, although the Section 57 of the ICT Act has been cancelled, proceedings of the cases filed earlier under the section will continue.

About the two new books, Mr Hoque said those were published so that present members of the police force can know about contribution of the police force in the Liberation War of 1971.

Police members of Rajarbagh police lines, according to him, built the first resistance against the occupational Pakistani Army when the latter unleashed so-called "Operation Search Light" in the barrack at the dead of night on March 25, 1971.

UNB said officials of the police headquarters were present at the book launching programme.
