The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a High Court order that directed Suprobhat Paribahan to pay Tk 1.0 million to the family of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury who was killed in a road crash in the capital on March 19.

The four-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order rejecting a petition filed by Suprobhat Paribahan seeking stay on the HC order.

Earlier on March 20, the HC directed the authorities of Suprobhat Paribahan to pay Tk 1.0m to Abrar's family within seven days, UNB reported.

The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why directives would not be given to provide Tk 50 million as compensation for the death incident.

Abrar, son of Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury, died after being hit by a 'Suprobhat Paribahan' bus in front of Bashundhara gate at around 7:15 am on March 19.
