SC stays order on compensation to United Hospital fire victims

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a High Court order that had directed to pay Tk 3.0 million to each of the families of four out of five victims who were killed in a fire at the United Hospital on May 27.

A bench of Chamber Judge Justice Md Nuruzzaman stayed the order and fixed August 16 to hear the appeal in a regular bench of the Appellate Division, reports UNB.

Earlier on Monday, the hospital authorities filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking stay on the HC order.

On July 14, HC directed the hospital authorities to pay the victims within 15 days.

The court did not issue any order regarding the family of Monir Hossain, who was also killed in the fire, as they had settled the matter through discussions with the hospital authorities.

On May 27, a fire broke out in the coronavirus isolation unit of United Hospital that killed four men and a woman.

A case was filed against the hospital authorities with Gulshan Police Station on charge of "negligent death".
