SC disposes Ekram killing case within 4 months

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday ordered to dispose the Fulgazi upazila parishad chairman Ekramul Haque killing case within next four months.

A five-member SC bench, led by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, passed the order.

The court also stayed a High Court (HC) order granted six months bail to BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar in the killing case until an HC rule in this regard comes to an end.

On October 22, the HC granted the six-month bail to Minar in the killing case and issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why the BNP leader would not be granted permanent bail in the murder case.

On October 30, the Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court stayed for four months the HC bail order in response to an appeal of the state challenging the bail order.

Ekram, also the president of Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League, came under attack by armed miscreants in front of Bilasi Cinema Hall on May 20, 2014 while on his way to Fulgazi upazila headquarters from his Masterpara residence in Feni district town, as per report on UNB agency.

The attackers intercepted his microbus and fired at him from very close range and then set fire to the vehicle. They left the scene after confirming Ekram's death on the spot.

Ekram's brother Rezaul Haque Jasim filed a case against Minar and 35 unidentified people with Feni Model Police Station on May 21, 2014.

Plainclothes police arrested Minar from the capital on May 27, 2014.
