SC backlog of cases worries chief justice

Chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has expressed profound concern over a huge backlog of cases pending with the apex court, which is now around 5,25,000.

"The backlog of cases has reached such a level at the Supreme Court that even files cannot be accommodated there properly," he said during a case hearing on Sunday.

Attorney general Mahbube Alam and former attorney general AF Hasan Arif were present during the case hearing, local media reports say.

Earlier on Saturday, the Justice Audit Bangladesh was made public at the Supreme Court auditorium in Dhaka city on Sunday morning.

Speaking at the event, chief justice Hossain said, "I am almost embarrassed... with so many cases pending with the Supreme Court."

To address this, he said, "I have decided to sit with all justices of the Supreme Court to determine the imperatives in this regard."

The country’s judiciary now has around 3.4 million pending cases, including 5,25,000 at the Supreme Court. In 1982, there were only 25,000 cases pending with the apex court.
