A good number of garlic growers in the district are worried as root rotting disease has affected their field a few days ago.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), around 1230 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of garlic in the district this season.
In a visit recently the correspondent found that plants of the affected land were getting dry due to rapid root rotting. Farmers were trying their best to save their cropland by spraying pesticide according to the suggestion of the concerned authority. Some growers of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Shibganj and Nandigram upazilas have already started harvesting their immature produce from the affected field.
Meanwhile, more than 390 hectares of land have been immensely affected with the disease. Rest of the lands could be affected if precaution steps do not take immediately, sources said.
Farmers said the disease is causing massive damage to many garlic fields in different villages of all the 12 upazilas this season.
Expressing frustration some affected growers said market price of the spicy crop is satisfactory this season but root rotting disease faded all their expectations.
DAE office sources said their field-level officials are providing necessary suggestion to the garlic cultivators to combat the disease.
