Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the main construction of the nuclear power reactor at Rooppur in Pabna.

This began the main phase of construction for the country’s first nuclear power plant.

The prime minister flew by helicopter to the location on the shores of the Padma in Ishwardi Upazila early Thursday.

Hasina stood on a temporary stage at the site and used a trowel to pour the first concrete casting, bdnews24 reports.

The sub-base is being built this year as preparation for the construction of the reactor. The construction of the reactor will also begin this year.

Russian firm Atomstroyexport has 68 months following the inauguration ceremony to complete the construction work.

The government hopes the first unit of the Rooppur plant will add 1,200 megawatts of power to the national grid in mid-2023. The second unit will be available in 2024.
