Road accidents largely increase this Eid-ul-Azha: Report

Road accidents have increased by 59.30 per cent and thus death tolls by 37.61 per cent during holidays of Eid-ul-Adha, compared to those of last year’s.

During this year's Eid-ul-Azha celebrations, an average of 26 people were killed in road accidents every day, according to a report published by Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

At least 311 people were killed and 1,197 others injured in different accidents across the country in the last 12 days from July 5 to July 16, it reveals.

The RSF data shows some 274 accidents took place this Eid.

During last year’s Eid-ul-Azha, the number of accidents and fatalities remained lower due to government restrictions on public movement aiming at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Road accidents and thus deaths have largely increased over the last year and that has been largely attributed to a large increase in motorcycle accidents across the country.

During the period, the number of accidents involving motorcycles was the highest, according to the RSF report.

Some 123 people died in 154 motorcycle accidents before and after Eid-ul-Azha days, which is 39.54 per cent of the total deaths, said the report, released on Thursday.

The RSF prepared the report based on news published in nine national dailies, seven online news portals, and electronic media.
