RMG workers on rampage after bus injures one fellow in Gazipur

Garment workers set a bus on fire and vandalised 10 others in Gazipur following a road crash that left one of their fellows injured on Tuesday.

According to the workers and locals, Monir Hossain, an electrician of Alif Casual Garment factory in the Choydana area, was seriously injured after being hit by a bus at around 2:00 pm while crossing the highway.

He was first sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital (STAMC) and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment, reports UNB.

Enraged by the accident, garment workers took the highway and set a bus of ‘Shoukhin Paribahan’ afire and vandalized at least 10 buses on the highway.

They blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, disrupting vehicular movement for two hours.

The protesting workers alleged at least three workers were killed in road crashes there in the last one year.

Meanwhile, a long tailback was created on both sides of the highway due to the blockade, causing suffering to the passengers.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Abdullah Al Mamun said traffic movement on the highway returned to normal around 4:00 pm as they brought the situation under control.
