Rising Covid-19 cases: Trains to ply at half capacity again

As instructed by the government, the railway authority has started selling only 50 per cent of its train tickets to bring down the passenger load to a half amid the growing cases of coronavirus in the country.

Mihir Kanti Guha, general manager (west) of Bangladesh Railway, confirmed the matter to The Financial Express on Tuesday.

However, it will take three to four days to completely comply with running the train service at half capacity as they have already sold tickets in advance, he said.

Of the 50 per cent tickets that will only be selling from now onwards until instructed otherwise, 25 per cent of tickets will be available at counters and the other half online, Mr Guha said.

Ticket price is the same as before, he said and urged passengers not to crowd the counters while purchasing tickets.

Passengers must use a mask, Mr Guha said, adding that no passengers will be allowed to enter the station or travel by trains without a mask.

Bangladesh Railway reduced its passenger service to a half on May 31 of last year to stem the outbreak of coronavirus, which it resumed normally on September 16 as the outbreak subsided.
