Rights groups have called for ensuring zero-cost migration for Bangladeshi workers as they pay the highest among workers from different job-destination countries.
The government should discuss the matter with its counterparts of different job-destination countries so that the employers bear the cost of migration.
The government and the employers will have to take all possible efforts for skill development of migrant workers; eight-hour work day should be fixed for domestic helps and International Labour Law (ILO) convention regarding wage and working hours needs to be followed to ensure the rights of the domestic workers.
The rights groups put forth the demands from a rally in the city on Friday ahead of International Migrants Day that is scheduled to be observed today (Saturday), according to a press release.
The event was organised by different rights bodies including Bangladesh Nari Sramik Kendra, Ovibashi Karmi Unnayan Program, Bangladesh Obhibashi Shramik Forum, Association for Social Development of Bangladesh and Samajtantrik Sramik Front.
Activists, workers and their families joined the rally and placed the demands which are vital for their human rights.
Dignity and welfare of both the male and female migrant workers need to the addressed at home and abroad, they observed.
The authorities will have to recognise domestic workers as formal workers giving them all benefits, they demanded, also calling for checking wage theft of domestic workers by the employers.
