Rights activists demand immediate release of Rayhan Kabir

Rights activists demanded immediate release of Rayhan Kabir who was arrested by Malaysian law enforcers recently for speaking in a documentary broadcasted by Al Jazeera.

They also urged to stop all kinds of discriminatory attitude to migrant workers abroad.

They made their demand at a human chain on Wednesday in front of National Press Club in the city. Bangladesh Nari Sromik Kendra (BNSK) and Bangladesh Labour Rights Forum jointly organised the programme where representative from 64 organisations were present.

Relatives of Rayhan Kabir also attended the programme and said their son did not commit any crime and demanded his early release.

After the human chain, they submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, a group of friends and relatives of Rayhan Kabir organised another human chain at the same place on the day said, “Rayhan told the truth. We demand ensuring his security.”

One of the friends of Rayhan Kabir named Shohel Akhand said although Bangladeshis are tortured, Bangladesh embassy in Kuala Lumpur does not take any move to stop it.

So, he demanded dismissal of ambassador and said the ambassador did not protest the arrest of Rayhan Kabir.

Shohel also faced jail and was deported from Malaysia earlier.

The investigative documentary titled ‘Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown’ was broadcasted on July 03 2020 as part of Al Jazeera’s “101 East” documentary series. It shows that the Malaysian government is discriminating against migrants during the epidemic through the Movement Control Order (MCO). The evidence shown in the documentary on Malaysia's crackdown on immigrants is reprehensible and deeply troubling. There have been similar allegations in the past against Malaysian law enforcement agencies.
